Homework: Finish revising quiz and finish your number line (with fractions, with decimals and with your calculator).

Pay It Forward

Welcome to your first 2 Minutes to make a Difference Assignment.  This will start you on your journey to make a 2 minute movie by the end of March.  Here is your assignment.

Excerpt from the movie:
"You see, I do something real good for three people. And then when they ask how
they can pay it back, I say they have to Pay It Forward...to three more people. Each. So, nine people get helped. Then those people have to do twenty-seven." He turned on the calculator, punched in a few numbers. "Then it sort of spreads out, see, to eighty-one, then two hundred forty-three, then seven hundred twenty-nine, then two thousand, one hundred eighty-seven. See how big it gets?"

Some possible ideas include:
·        Volunteer at a soup kitchen, hospital, care home
·        Clean up your community/school yard/park
·        Donate Food/Clothing/Toys/Books/Christmas gifts
·        Collect new and used toys and donate them to a hospital
·        Help deliver Christmas hampers
·        Make and deliver treat bags for children in hospitals (include pens, notepads, stickers, puzzles, candy, etc)
·        Send care packages for soldiers / write letters to soldiers
·        Become a pen pal with a senior citizen
·        Volunteer to baby-sit for free
·        Write ‘Thank you’ notes to people who have helped you
·        Leave cards or notes in mailboxes, on windshields, or hanging from doorknobs
·        AND LOTS, LOTS MORE!!

These are just possibilities. Students are asked to be creative and try to make a difference in someone’s life.

OMG the Second Term has arrived!! and so have the Aliens

Welcome to the first blog post of the second term.  It will serve as your wrap up of chapter 2 in the textbook.

Proportion and Ratio and Rate

An alien has landed from another planet.  He is a scout for his planet.  They plan on taking over the earth.

cc licensed flickr photo shared by kenyee

His computer will send a signal back to his home planet unless you type in how to solve 3 proportional reasoning questions.

To help you out use 3 problems from pages 67, 68 or 69 in your textbook.

You need to explain how you solved the questions using pictures and diagrams (show the ratio tables or equivalent fractions you used).

The assignment one more time.

  1. title it How I stopped an Alien Invasion using  Proportion  (make a better title if you want)
  2. Label it alienstory, proportion
  3. Include 3 problems from pages67, 68, 69 in your textbook.
  4. Have fun creating a great story but it is secondary to the math knowledge you need to show.
  5. If you want to include pictures you can use this site to look for interesting images.  Remember when you use images to cite them properly and only use images you are allowed to. (cc or creative commons)
  6. Flickrcc or you can try compfight but make sure you have the creative commons search on.

Have fun finding pictures that make your story better.  Some of the best searches happen when you search for pictures of adjectives or adverbs.

This is due Monday.

Sorry that I am sick but here is your introductionto Proportion.

I am still sick so you need to listen to these videos and figure out what you need to do.  All the work will happen in part 2.3 of your textbook on pages 63 to 67.  I have 2 short videos for you and then one video explaining your homework.  In case they do not work here is what you need to do.

Read Pages 63 to 66.  Understand that a proportion shows 2 equivalent ratios

Next you have to be able to write your proportion in different ways, fraction from, ratio form or decimal form.  This is not hard you have done it all before.

You need to use the two did you know activities in your work today as examples for your foldable.

  1. Finish your foldable.  Use the information on page 66 do help you define proportion.  Then use the two Show you know examples to add to your knowledge on the foldable.
  2. Complete Questions 1 to 5 in your notebook on page 66.

Here are the 3 videos.  Watch one then do the work.  Start the second video only when most of you are done your "show you know."
Finally watch the third video to have the homework explained.

All of this is due on Monday.

  5. Choose one ratio that you have done and show how to write that ratio in ratio notation, fraction, decimal and percent form.
  6. Choose one ratio that you have written and show how to create equivalent ratios.
  7. Finally create 3 questions that you want people to answer in the comments. Do not make them to hard or too easy.
  8. Answer your questions in the comment section of your post.
  9. Go and answer as many questions as you can about ratio at other posts in your room and the other rooms in grade 8.

  • Organized Data
  • Graph 1 showing the data and 2 to 3 sentences explaining conclusions that can be made.
  • Graph 2 Misrepresent the data and redraw the graph.  2 to 3 sentences explaining what you have done.

Welcome to Blogging

A Colleague of mine Mr. Kuropatwa created this post for his students. Since it is Internet Safety Week please pay attention to the videos below.

Blogging is a very public activity. Anything that gets posted on the internet stays there. Forever. Deleting a post simply removes it from the blog it was posted to. Copies of the post may exist scattered all over the internet. I have come across posts from my students on blogs as far away as Sweden! That is why we are being so careful to respect your privacy and using first names only. We do not use pictures of ourselves. If you really want a graphic image associated with your posting use an avatar -- a picture of something that represents you but IS NOT of you.

Here are a few videos that illustrate some of what I want you to think about:

Two teachers in the U.S.A. worked with their classes to come up with a list of guidelines for student bloggers.

One of them, Bud Hunt, has these suggestions, among others:
  1. Students using blogs are expected to treat blogspaces as classroom spaces. Speech that is inappropriate for class is not appropriate for our blog. While we encourage you to engage in debate and conversation with other bloggers, we also expect that you will conduct yourself in a manner reflective of a representative of this school.
  2. Never EVER EVER give out or record personal information on our blog. Our blog exists as a public space on the Internet. Don’t share anything that you don’t want the world to know. For your safety, be careful what you say, too. Don’t give out your phone number or home address. This is particularly important to remember if you have a personal online journal or blog elsewhere.
  3. Again, your blog is a public space. And if you put it on the Internet, odds are really good that it will stay on the Internet. Always. That means ten years from now when you are looking for a job, it might be possible for an employer to discover some really hateful and immature things you said when you were younger and more prone to foolish things. Be sure that anything you write you are proud of. It can come back to haunt you if you don’t.
  4. Never link to something you haven’t read. While it isn’t your job to police the Internet, when you link to something, you should make sure it is something that you really want to be associated with. If a link contains material that might be creepy or make some people uncomfortable, you should probably try a different source.

Another teacher, Steve Lazar, developed a set of guidelines in consultation with his students. You can read them here.

Look over the guidelines and add the ones you like in the comments section below this post; either from one of Steve's students or one of your own. I think Bud's suggestions are excellent. We'll be using the one's I highlighted above as a basis for how we will use our blog.

Cheers,
Mr. K.

I could not have written it any better. Enjoy blogging and use your head. Thanks

Mr. Harbeck

Passion

Learning is about passion.
Flickr attribution http://www.flickr.com/photos/tyla/3196687667/ by Tyla'75

You need to have this passion to succeed in life. In recent weeks I have seen many of you get spring fever and lose your will to learn. Many of you are going goldfish,

not asking questions and just wanting answers. This passiveness needs to disappear and you need to rekindle your passion to learn.

We only have a few weeks left in school. Take everyday as an opportunity to find new things to learn and use this knowledge to succeed on your final assignments and exams.

Watch this video and listen to these Grade 5 students. They are part of a noon hour club in New York City. These kids have passion. They want to sing, learn be active in society. Watch their faces as they sing and the passion in their voices. The students have sung onstage with many performers and will be singing with Fleetwood Mac at Madison Square Gardens infront of 18 000 fans on June 11th.

Find your passion and succeed.
